"Taiwan" to apply for UN membership
By : Darice Lee , NATWA President 2007, 09, 27 Many of you might have heard or read the news about the NATWA sit-in protest. This is the first time a Taiwanese organization had a sit-in protest in front of the United Nations Building. This is also the first time the Taiwan Government is using "Taiwan" to apply for UN membership.
NATWA chose to hold a sit-in protest during the beginning of the United Nations' annual convention. It brought a lots of public attention, including four TV stations and at least six or seven newspaper interviews. The TV broadcasting was even sent to the South Africa. I would like to give my special thanks to our previous president - Jean Fang, for her dedication in coordinating this event. Helen Wang, another previous president, who had just retired for three days, scheduled to sit-in for four days, her husband Ken joined the last day of the sit-in, their wonderful hospitality surely warms my heart. Hannah Wang, president of the NY chapter,Shu Kuo,president of the NJ chapter and Patsy Chen of the Greater New York Chapter of the Taiwanese Association, Julia Huang of New Jersey walked over forty minutes one way for four days to join with the group.
More over, from Los Angeles were Tonia Wang with us for four days, and Dr. Simon Lin, participated in the Sept. 15th rally he stayed with us for another two days. Some sisters from San Francisco and San Diego also added strength to our group. Ms. Wei-Ting Wu the executive director of the America East Chapter of the DPP,prepared news release for us. Mr. & Mrs. Hao of Manhattan served us wonderful lunch.
There are so many sisters and brothers from the NY and NJ area that I can not name them one by one are with us. We had between twenty and thirty plus participants every day. We had such wonderful feeling for each other. All I can say is this was a great experience I am glad to have as a part of my life. With my sincere gratitude, to those who had participated in this event. I thank you very much!
God Bless Taiwan, Darice Lee
